These log books facilitate the management and enforcement of minimum supervised hours of driving requirements. Learner drivers in most Australian jurisdictions must complete a log book that records their practice, thereby confirming to the licensing authority that they have met the mandated hours of practice requirement. Though many jurisdictions internationally now require learner drivers to complete a specified number of hours of supervised driving practice before being able to drive unaccompanied, very few require learner drivers to complete a log book to record this practice and then present it to the licensing authority. Planned and controlled involvement with a professional driving instructor will enhance the experience being gained under supervised driving for both learners and their supervisors. The proposal provides for a structured tutorship program where a driving instructor can provide individualised professional guidance and advice for learner drivers and their supervisory drivers consistently throughout the learning process and the period of learner driver licence tenure. A log book discount of 3 hours credit for each 1 hour of professional tuition, to a maximum of 10 hours of professional tuition by an accredited driving instructor is proposed. The Enhanced Training Program is an education intervention that allows for the direct targeting of an individual-their knowledge, beliefs and attitudes, and their behaviour and skills-within the real on-road context where driving occurs and over the full period of learner driver licence tenure. This paper proposes the introduction of an Enhanced Training Program (ETP) as a structured program that overlays the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority's successful graduated driver licensing system and the 120 hour log book requirement.
